Brian's Story
Brian Callery is celebrating 40 years in our business. It's a commitment that makes a difference in his clients' businesses.

I'm told that ruby is the appropriate anniversary gift after 40 years, but Brian Callery received something even better than that when his family, friends and clients joined together last month to celebrate the man who made the Callery Group a reality.

As impressive as four decades in any business would be, there's something else that sets Brian apart from his peers in the world of benefits and financial planning. Looking around the room, I couldn't help but notice the number of familiar faces. Many of them have counted on the Callery Group for years. Some represented families who have been turning to Brian for generations.

He has been with all of them for the long run.

"Brian helped us get where we are now," says Mike Winslow of Peterborough's Winslow-Gerolamy Motors, who first became a life insurance client in 1975. "From the outset, I really liked Brian. He was a go-getter and understood the business, what we needed and what we could afford." The connection also deepened as the business expanded, and he guided everyone through a formal succession plan. Sure, there were always providers who tried to pry the business away with a promise of better rates. "But there's no way they could compete in the service," he says.

You simply don't abandon someone who helps watch over your family.

Brian learned that lesson at an early age, as one of 11 kids. "The older kids looked after the younger kids. Thus, we learned shared responsibility young. Everyone had to pitch in and we inspired one another," he recently reflected.

Brian has also helped Williams Communications Services for years, first with the founding Williams family and then entrepreneur Harold Seibel, professional engineer Don Seibel, Susan Seibel and her sister-in-law, Lynda.

"Don and Brian worked well together to protect and generate family wealth, preserving capital and managing risk. The Williams' story was one of successful succession planning," Susan told the gathered crowd. Harold passed away in 2012, and her husband Don a year later. Brian helped to guide the family through the recent sale of the business.

"Brian became a rock for myself and Lynda. He carried us through this challenge," she said. "Family dynamics play an integral role in the sale of a family business. With Brian's help, Lynda and I have become closer in the last two years than ever before."

Their stories were not unique to the crowd. Everyone there had benefitted from Brian's guiding hand.

He believes in bringing the community together, too. At the event where they celebrated his work, he also raised thousands of dollars to help fight epilepsy. That is only the latest example of the way he gives back to the community.

"Philanthropy is a great privilege. A great energizer. We are so fortunate to be able to help those less fortunate as long as they are doing their best to help themselves," he says.

I know it's also been a great privilege to work at his side.

 Top Tips:

  • Just one top tip for this month: Find people who share your common goals and stick with them. Many thanks to Brian Callery for taking the time to read my resume more than 11 years ago – and for giving me a opportunity to join the Callery family.
